    GABRIEL COUTO is building a Housing Building in the center of Lisbon
    Open or Close

    It is a housing building with 6 fractions divided by 4 floors and basement consisting of 3 floors buried. The situation in the heart of Lisbon, in a very narrow street, one way and with car parking, entails and demands a special care in the management of access to the work and transportation of materials. The building is a reinforced concrete building and cover in metallic structure with MDF to support the waterproofing system consisting of subtle and Marseilles tiles.

    The excavation for the construction of the basement was the biggest challenge. Implemented in a 200m2 plot, a 10 m deep excavation was carried out in relation to the threshold level to accommodate the three parking floors. The construction of the support walls of the building was made using Berlin-type walls and shoring with metallic profiles. Adjacent there is a 4 story building that has not suffered any damage.

    A particular feature of the building is its automatic parking system.the cars are left on floor 0 and then placed by the system on the lower floors.

    Since the parking spaces were optimized for the area, the exact implantation of concrete walls and slabs was decisive, and all the measurements of the system had to be fulfilled, which implied that all the construction of the walls and slabs were to run without any kind of tolerance.

    The relationship between Gabriel Couto and the group that owns the Torel Boutiques, consolidated with the recent construction of the Hotel Torel Avantgarde, in Porto and which won a prize World Luxury Hotel Awards. The invitation demonstrates once again the confidence in the work that Gabriel Couto has developed in the most diverse sectors. namely the "Off Liberdade" project in Lisbon and the Gondarém Condominium in Porto.

    Gabriel Couto is completing the first phase of the Ovadas Hydroelectric Plant Contract – “Replacement of the Concrete Water Distribution Conduct”, in Ovadas - Resende, awarded last June by EDP - Gestão de Produção de Energia, SA. and the EDP subsidiary, Pebble Hydro - Consultoria Investimento e Serviços, Lda.

    The purpose of the project is to replace the existing concrete pipe with a PRFV pipe of equal diameter (1000 mm) and pressure (PN 6 to PN20), over a distance of about 2.1 km.

    The hydroelectric project of Ovadas, located on the Cabrum River, a tributary of the left bank of the Douro River, is located some six kilometers upstream from the Freigil Dam, and was first placed in service in 1993.

    The substitution was necessitated by the degradation of the existing conduit, which experienced increased leakage and ruptures, leading to the inoperability of the plant and consequent loss of revenue.

    The major stages of the project are:
    1) Execution of access and clearance work;
    2) Removal of existing ductwork in reinforced concrete and demolition of existing reinforced concrete;
    3) Installation of the new PRFV pipeline and execution of new reinforced concrete masses;

    Gabriel Couto has begun a draft research and development project funded by IP (Infraestruturas de Portugal) in partnership with Vias y Construcciones, ELECTREN and the University of Minho. The project evaluates the possibility of improving soils used for the construction of transport infrastructure through the use of waste. If successful, the technique may provide new alternatives for the stabilization of soil in geotechnical work associated with the construction of railways, including both the road base and embankments. Additionally, the technical studies conducted during this project may also lead to the improvement of soils used in the construction of roads and associated infrastructure. The introduction of new technologies is both a key requirement for the evolution of the art, as well as an important factor in promoting competitiveness in the sector. Gabriel Couto has long been a leader in investigating promising innovative techniques that can enhance its ability to satisfy and exceed its clients’ expectations.

    The bridge deck construction process knows as, "Incremental Launch System Tray", never before seen in Swaziland, aroused the interest of several public and private entities and individuals. To provide some appreciation of the advantages of this unique construction method, including its proven time-saving potential, a site visit was arranged for October 21, 2015. The visit coincided with the schedule for pulling the fourth tray segment of the Siphofaneni bridge into position. The observers were able to witness the sliding placement of a thirty-meter long deck segment having an approximate weight of 2,000 metric tons. To illustrate the management of the frictional forces between the surface of the board and that of the supporting equipment, the force required to move this enormous mass was estimated to only be in the range of 50 to 100 metric tons. In addition to Siphofaneni Bridge, visits to neighboring worksites were also held, including one to inspect the completed roads associated with this project, and another to the Mhlathuzane Bridge which was rapidly approaching completion.

    Gabriel Couto announced the commencement of operations at a large quarry in Mozambique. Located in Malema, some 19 miles from Cuamba near the current N8 road (the future N 13) linking Cuamba to Nampula, the quarry was established to efficiently supply crushed aggregates for the project upgrading the Nampula-Cuamba road under a contract with the ANE (National Roads Administration). The quarry’s strategic location will allow it to provide crushed aggregate to several additional projects which are either planned or underway in the region. The Company estimates, for the quarry, 400,000 m3 of extracted rock " in situ" ( some 14 million cubic feet of rock) the equivalent of about one million tons of processed material. The quarry is equipped for an average daily production of some 1,600 tons per day, and in 2015 it is scheduled to produce about 355,000 tons of primary crushed stone, 40,000 tons of aggregates for pavement, 15,000 tons of aggregates for concrete, and 300,000 tons of aggregates for stone base. The quarry currently meets all Mozambique licensing requirements, and the current mining certificate is valid through 2016. Gabriel Couto has assigned a carefully selected team to the quarry, including a mining engineer, a quarry officer, crusher operators, drilling operators, explosive specialists, dumper operators, wheel loaders and excavators. A strong commitment was made to train local personnel to become qualified operators of all types of equipment and to handle explosives. The quarry is equipped with primary crushers, a secondary conic crusher, and a tertiary conic crusher with vibrating screen. Additionally serving the quarry are four crawler excavators (30 and 35 ton.), four loaders, and three articulated dumpers (35 and 40 ton). Drilling equipment consists of a Crawler ROC. Recently, a unit for a second worksite within the quarry was obtained, representing an additional investment of € 600,535. The acquisition of this equipment will double the production capacity of the second worksite.

    Construction of infrastructure for railway signaling system

    Adding to its previous assignments from VALE, the Brazilian-based global mining company, Gabriel Couto was selected in January of this year to participate in the $7.8 million Nacala Rail Corridor project. Secure operation of this important rail link requires a signaling and control system centered on an Operational Control Center (“OCC”) where all trains moving within the corridor can be identified and monitored. “TETRA”, a telecommunications system, has been designed to provide connectivity among the OCC and the several supplemental locations along the route which will each house an underground telecommunications and signaling network node. Gabriel Couto has been contracted to provide the foundations for the telecommunications tower and for the power generation units. The project is located in the Mozambique provinces of Niassa and Nampula, a geographical area familiar to the Company which is already engaged in several other projects for VALE in the region. The Company was introduced to VALE in 2011 during the technical and economic studies that led to the contract for the N13 and the quarry operations. The rail project will cover an area between the border with Malawi and Mutivasse, a town 25 miles northwest of Nampula. The most significant challenge posed by the project arises from the number of widely-dispersed sites where construction must be completed within the nine-month period stipulated for completion. Dealing with such a large geographical area adds substantial complexity to the logistics of such a project, but the Company’s longstanding dedication to careful advanced planning will be a significant asset to both ensuring that the project is completed within the strict time limits required, and to proving that the confidence placed in the Company was justified.
